Positions: FAFN Residential Support Worker – FAWS   Project Hope         Department:  Women’s Shelter

Term: Full-Time / Part-Time / Shift-Based Contract March 31, 2025*         Hours:  40 Hours per week

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Shelter Supervisor, the Residential Support Worker provides direct, culturally sensitive support to First Nations individuals and families in an urban shelter setting. This role is critical in creating a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for clients facing homelessness, abuse, or other crises. Reporting to the Shelter Director, the Residential Support Worker ensures that clients’ basic needs are met and helps them navigate shelter services while honoring and integrating First Nations cultural practices. This position involves evening, overnight, or weekend shifts as needed.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Client Support:
    • Welcome clients to the shelter and conduct initial intake to assess immediate needs, ensuring each client feels respected and supported.
    • Assist clients in accessing essential services such as meals, hygiene supplies, clothing, and personal care items.
    • Provide emotional support, active listening, and guidance to clients as they work toward personal goals, respecting each individual’s cultural background and values.
    • Assist with conflict resolution, de-escalation, and crisis intervention, using trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches.

 

  • Program Support:
    • Collaborate with the Shelter Coordinator to facilitate culturally relevant programming, such as traditional healing activities, elder visits, and wellness workshops.
    • Encourage client participation in shelter programs and activities, promoting engagement in wellness, life skills, and cultural events.
    • Support clients in attending appointments, connecting with community resources, and obtaining referrals to health, social, and housing services.

 

  • Safety & Security:
    • Ensure a safe, clean, and organized shelter environment, performing routine checks of common areas, sleeping quarters, and other facilities.
    • Monitor and address client needs during evening, overnight, and weekend shifts, ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
    • Adhere to shelter policies and procedures, and respond to any incidents in line with established protocols, including reporting and documentation.

 

  • Documentation & Communication:
    • Maintain accurate records of client interactions, incidents, and service updates, following confidentiality requirements.
    • Communicate effectively with other shelter staff and supervisors to ensure continuity of care and client support.
    • Attend team meetings, debriefing sessions, and training to stay informed of shelter policies, resources, and cultural practices.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Diploma or coursework in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or a related field is an asset.

 

  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working with First Nations populations, particularly in urban or shelter settings, is preferred.
    • Experience in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, or supportive housing is an asset.

 

  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with a compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental approach.
    • Ability to remain calm and supportive in high-stress situations and respond to crises with empathy and professionalism.
    • Cultural competence and understanding of First Nations traditions, values, and healing practices.
    • Basic knowledge of community resources for housing, health, mental health, and addiction support.

 

Additional Requirements:

 

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Deep respect for and understanding of First Nations cultural practices and the impact of intergenerational trauma.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work evening, overnight, or weekend shifts as needed to support the shelter’s 24/7 operation.
  • Clearances: Ability to pass a background check, including vulnerable sector screening.
