POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Land Based Healing Program Coordinator, the Mental Health and Wellness Worker provides support and linkages with other providers/services for community members to regain balance. Priority is given to clients who have substance abuse dependence or disorder and/or a concurrent disorder. Substance abuse assessment, pre-treatment activities, aftercare, crisis support, and relapse prevention activities are the focus of this role.
REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum two-year Addictions or Social Work Diploma or a Diploma in a related field is required. A three-year BSW Degree is preferred.
- A minimum two (2) years experience in the field of addictions; a combination of training and experience in working within First Nation communities
- Sound knowledge of the Indigenous culture and the social issues affecting the mental health of communities within the Mushkegowuk territory.
- Sound knowledge of the positive traditional influences that could promote mental health and wellness of community members: Knowledge and use of plants and medicines, ceremonial activity, and sharing circles.
- Experience working in the education field and land-based activities is an asset.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, tradition, teachings and healing practices.
- Develop and maintain respectful, cooperative working relationships with clients, communities and partnering agencies to promote an integrated, seamless delivery of service;
- Experience in group facilitation
- Excellent written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge and proficiency in computer programs and databases
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work under minimum supervision.
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and travel.
- Ability to communicate in the Cree language would be considered an asset.
- Must have a Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License
- Current Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening are required.
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate is required.
- Mental Health First Aid required.
