Apitipi Anicinapek Nation is seeking a knowledgeable, respectful and
community-minded individual for the position of Traditional Governance Coordinator.
The Coordinator will support the revitalization, development and implementation of the
Nation's traditional governance systems. Working with Chief and Council, Elders,
Knowledge Keepers, citizens and staff, the successful candidate will help strengthen the
Nation's traditional laws, customs, values, leadership practices and decision-making
processes.
This position supports a community-led process, based on Apitipi Anicinapek Nation’s
traditions.
Key Responsibilities
● Coordinate community discussions, meetings, workshops and talking circles.
● Support research concerning the Nation's traditional governance systems, laws
and customs,
● Work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers and traditional leaders.
● Follow cultural protocols when requesting, recording or sharing traditional
knowledge.
● Support the development of governance policies, laws, protocols and community
processes.
● Review historical records, oral histories, treaties and governance documents.
Prepare reports, briefing notes, meeting minutes, policies and recommendations.
● Record community feedback and ensure it is accurately reflected in governance
work.
● Protect confidential, cultural and traditional knowledge.
● Ensure the Nation maintains ownership and control of its information and
records.
● Assist with project work plans, budgets, funding proposals and required reports.
● Provide regular project updates to leadership and the community as required.
● Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
● Education or experience in Indigenous governance, Indigenous studies, public
administration, political science, law, community development or a related area.
● Knowledge of First Nation governance, inherent rights, Treaty rights and
self-determination.
● An understanding of the Nation's history, culture, customs and community
priorities. Experience working respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers,
leadership and community members.
● Experience in community engagement, research, policy development or project
coordination.
● Strong communication, listening, writing, facilitation and organizational skills.
● The ability to prepare clear reports, policies, presentations and meeting records.
● The ability to protect sensitive and confidential information.
● The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Knowledge of the Nation's language is considered a strong asset.
● Experience working within a First Nation government is considered an asset.
● A valid driver's licence and reliable transportation may be required.
● A satisfactory criminal record check may be required.
A suitable combination of education, cultural knowledge, community experience and
employment experience will be considered.
Working Conditions
The position includes office and community-based work. Evening or weekend work may
be required for community meetings, ceremonies and special events. Some travel may
also be required.
