ABOUT ELECTRA BATTERY MATERIALS
Electra is planning to build North America’s only fully integrated, localized and
environmentally sustainable battery materials complex. Thus far, in 2024 Electra received
$10 million in Federal government funding and $20 million from the U.S. Department of
Defense to provide support toward the development of its battery materials complex.
Leveraging the company’s own mining assets and business partners, the Electra Battery
Materials Park will host a cobalt sulfate plant with plans to build a nickel sulfate plant and a
large-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility. Electra’s focus will be to supply the North
American Electric Vehicle market with battery materials to support the manufacturing of
lithium-ion batteries within North America. Electra Battery Materials is an integral part of the
North American battery supply chain, providing low-carbon, sustainable and traceable raw
materials for the region’s fast growing electric vehicle industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Below is a list of primary duties and responsibilities for the Mechanical Engineer in Training
position at the Cobalt Refinery:
- Assist engineers in preparing, coordinating, and reviewing deliverables for mechanical systems;
- Applying fundamentals and engineering tools to design mechanical systems including process equipment;
- Prepare engineering documents for mechanical equipment including datasheets, technical specifications and engineering requisitions;
- Provide oversight for minor mechanical projects within the plant and coordinate with other disciplines on these projects including electrical and instrumentation, structural, civil and process engineers;
- Liaise between owners team, engineering team and construction teams on various plant projects;
- Learn and adapt to various engineering tasks as required to meet changing market needs;
- Develop management systems to monitor refinery consumables and identify opportunities for cost reductions;
- Participate in the owners project team to support in establishing a preventative maintenance system;
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety standards as well as QA/QC related to the lab and production departments; and
- Other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, Mechanical Technologists may be considered;
- Advanced knowledge of principles and methods used in base metal processing;
- Good analytical skills for identifying mechanical shortfalls, bottlenecks and recommending design changes;
- Must be local or willing to relocate to Temiskaming Shores, ON;
- Innovative problem-solving skills and ability to take calculated risks to improve operating efficiencies applied to revenue generation and cost containment;
- Solid communication skills including good written composition and presentation of ideas and concepts;
- Willing to take on various services support tasks including mechanical, civil and preventative maintenance systems support; and,
- High level of computer literacy in MS Windows and MS Office applications.
